Diego comes from a lineage of visual artists starting with his grandfather, National Artist for Sculpture Abdulmari Asya Imao, down to his father, Abdulmari “Toym” de Leon Imao, Jr. From an early age he showed an interest in the arts, and the background from his family has provided a solid foundation for several explorations and personal development in regards to his own artistic vision. Currently studying BS Architecture at the prestigious University of the Philippines Diliman, he utilizes a more artistic and creative approach with practical design applications. This can be seen in his work for the UP Lantern Parade and his contribution to the Philippine Pavillion at the Venice Architecture Biennale with several other chosen students. At his studies in UP he exercises personal passions and advocacies through discussion and discourse with his college organization, the UP Architecture Forum. He also participates in climbs and hikes as a member of the UP Mountaineers which he joined at 12 years old, becoming one of the youngest members to be accepted in the organization.
Through his studies at UP Diliman and his extracurriculars, Diego hopes to contribute to the growing discussion of an appropriate Filipino Architecture for the Filipino People, and how it can be redefined into new designs and approaches that challenge preconceived notions of Architecture. This serves as his primary drive in exposing himself to material not commonly taught in the curriculum, such as new architectural software or theories, and through channels like his college org he is able to share this information with others to contribute to a collaborative studio environment.
