PhD in Coastal Resource Management

My academic background and professional experience is in the field of fisheries and coastal resources management. Being a researcher at the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies-College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas, I am involved in projects that focus on gender and fisheries development, and vulnerability of coastal communities to hydrometeorological hazards. In 2015, our team was tapped by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 6 to help them in the resource assessment in Sipalay City and Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental. The results of which will aid the concerned local government units in their decision-making for the declaration of critical habitat for marine turtles in their area. Similar resource assessment study was conducted in the Pandan Bay, Antique, but this time, the focus is on the status of coastal habitats in the area.

Currently, I am finishing the final report for my study entitled ‘Assessment of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of selected coastal communities in Iloilo Province’. The results of this research will serve as a decision-support for the local leaders in the study sites, as far as risk management, capacity-building and adaptation, is concerned.

I believe that with appropriate management of our country’s fisheries and coastal resources, our fisheries sector can be critical platform in achieving social equity.
