Fides Zaulda graduated summa cum laude in 2010 with a BS in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) from the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the University of the Philippines Diliman (NIMBB-UPD). She received the Eduardo Padlan, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Phi Sigma Honor Society for the Biological Sciences awards for academic excellence. She obtained a Master’s degree in MBB in 2015, working in the Plant Molecular Biology and Plant Virology Laboratory under Dr. Vermando Aquino. From 2011 to 2016, Fides worked as a research associate at the Marine Science Institute, NIMBB-UPD, and the Philippine Fiber Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and as a laboratory instructor on plant cell and tissue culture at NIMBB-UPD. Her research focused on the molecular characterization and detection of viruses infecting Musa species (the Abaca and Banana bunchy top viruses, Banana bract mosaic virus, and Abaca mosaic virus). She was involved in projects that aimed to develop pathogen-derived host resistance and diagnostic assays for these viruses. She presented her work at local and international conferences hosted by the International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences (ISSAAS), the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) – Philippines, and the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM).
