The Institute of Biology, the Natural Sciences Research Institute DNA Analysis Laboratory (UPD-NSRI DAL) and the Program on Forensics and Ethnicity of the Philippine Genome Center hosted the second Annual Forensic Science Symposium entitled; “The Next Generation / The Now Generation Forensic Science Symposium”. This three institutions are working together to develop forensic science in the Philippines through research, training of personnel and education to the students. The conference was held at the new IB Auditorium of the University of the Philippines – Diliman last Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon.
Ms. Sheila Estacio Dennis, 2014 U.S. Fulbright Scholar and from NYC OCME (Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York City) who joined the team at UPD NSRI DAL shared her insights into her work and research during her fellowship.
The symposium aimed to impart up-to-date knowledge on the importance of forensic science in human identification in criminal investigations, post-mass disaster work and in familial determinations and it discussed the current status of forensic science in the Philippines. The conference also aimed to enrich the growing discussion on the use of forensic science towards national development.
