“On behalf of the Fulbright Commission in the Philippines, it is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Napoleon “Billy” Abueva, National Artist for Sculpture and Fulbright Scholar (1954), at the age of 88.
Dr Abueva is the embodiment of the Fulbright ideal. He was the youngest ever National Artist awardee at age 46 and his masterpieces have received both local and international acclaim. Considered the “Father of Philippine Modern Sculpture,” Dr Abueva served as an inspiration and mentor to many young artists and leaves a lasting legacy in Philippine culture and society. More importantly, he will be remembered as a proud and cherished member of the Fulbright Philippines family.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Abueva family at their time of loss.”
