This 2019, we aim to showcase 70+ years of cultivating excellence.
“Fulbright Perspectives” is a series of events which will display the wide range of talent and expertise of our alumni. This offers new and continuing opportunities for Fulbrighters to stay involved with the Commission and one another.
Events will be free and open to the public, and may include social, cultural, and educational programs.
The first event, which also serves as the official launch of Fulbright Perspectives, will have Philippine artist Toym de Leon Imao as the guest speaker. In 2010, he attended the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) for his MFA in Sculpture. He is also son of the late National Artist and former Fulbright scholar Abdulmari Asia Imao.
On February 19, Toym will be hosting a lecture titled “Creative Protest: The Artist as Activist” at the PAEF office in Makati from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
“When the truth is under siege, and the press is pinned down by the state, the arts become our second line of defense.” (Toym Leon Imao, 2017)
In an era when social media is weaponized to spread fake news and historical revisionism, we examine how humor, satire, and creative mockery become an essential element in protest culture.
Admission is free and open to the public. It will be attended by friends and guests from the U.S. Embassy and other affiliated offices. Kindly RSVP through this link: http://bit.ly/2G5YXfw, or call us at (02) 812-0919 or 812-0945.
