The Fulbright Commissions in Japan and the Philippines, in partnership with the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Foundation, will host a webinar entitled “Strengthening Transnational Bonds in the Era of Online Connections: Research and Educational Exchange in the U.S., Japan, and the Philippines.” The free online discussion is a collaboration between Fulbright Japan, Fulbright Philippines, the OIST Foundation, the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and edX, an online platform for education and learning. The webinar will go live on June 30 (8:00 AM, Manila).
After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern, nations and regions were left with the challenge of finding solutions to the pandemic, while also addressing the fate of research and education in the local and international setting.
Matthew Sussman, Fulbright Japan executive director said that through the webinar, “we hope to reaffirm and inspire our target audience that international research and educational exchange are more important than ever as countries around the world deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Julio Amador III, executive director of Fulbright Philippines believes that the core values of the Fulbright Program focused on mutual understanding and cooperation among nations are essential in the search for solutions that COVID-19 has inflicted on many sectors of society.
“The vision of countries participating in the Fulbright Program’s educational exchange initiatives is to empower the minds that will find national and global solutions to tomorrow’s challenges. The demand posed by the COVID-19 pandemic gives nations an opportunity to fulfill this vision. We now reach out to expert Fulbright alumni for an online discussion to potentially address concerns for international education exchange in each country,” Amador said.
Panelists for the online discussion include CHED Chairman Dr. Julian Prospero De Vera, Prof. Shingo Ashizawa of the Toyo University in Tokyo, Dr. Misaki Takabayashi, Vice Dean of the Graduate School at the OIST, and Mr. Lee Rubenstein, Vice President of Business Development at edX. De Vera and Ashizawa have both studied in the United States under Fulbright scholarships.
The webinar aims to gather participants from higher educational institutions (HEIs) and educators from various fields of learning and disciplines. The online platform also gives an opportunity to discuss new trends and creative approaches to building international connections between and among students, HEIs, and educators.
