Aileen is a Professor at the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of the Philippines Diliman. She obtained her PhD in English Language Studies from the National University of Singapore, MA in English from Virginia Tech, and BA in English Studies: Language from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She writes in the areas of language and affect, language and work, language and gender, and the politics of English/es, and has published in journals like the International Journal of the Sociology of Language, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies, and Journal of Sociolinguistics.
Aileen’s current research centers on the affective dimensions of English in the Philippines, specifically the role of affect in the construction and maintenance of dominant linguistic practices and long-standing beliefs and attitudes around language. As a Fulbright Visiting Scholar, Aileen will visit selected archives of the early years of American colonial education in the Philippines and trace the affective mobilization of English from this period. Apart from her archival project, she looks forward to sharing her research and learning about the works of other scholars, building new networks, and creating meaningful collaborations through various engagements in her host institution.
