In the United States, the aroma of salty-buttery popcorn is usually synonymous to watching movies. But among Filipino PAEF scholar alumni, the popcorn’s equivalent is the caramelized, freshly fried turon. Thus, became the official name of the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Association film-showing series.
Atty. Arnel Jose Banas, Deputy Secretary for Administrative and Financial Services of the Senate of the Philippines and Hubert Humphrey fellow ‘07 spearheaded the event.
“The Humphrey Turon Special is intended to be a light bonding moment amongst Humphrey fellows, others scholars and guests. It also highlights the bayanihan spirit…,” he said. Part of the gathering also involved sharing traditional Filipino snacks such as ginataang bilo-bilo, pancit bihon, puto and most importantly, the special turon.
The British-Filipino indie crime drama film Metro Manila was at the spotlight of the recent Hubert H. Humphrey Turon Special which took place at the PAEF office. It was selected as the British entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Oscar Academy Awards. The film tackles various relevant social issues in the Philippines, particularly on crime and corruption.
An alternate event, the Humphrey Voices which will tackle Human Trafficking , will be held on July 21, 2016 at Centro Escolar University.
