Two Filipino lawyers have been selected to represent the country in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for 2020. Lawyers Madonna Gay Escio and Jeza Mae Sarah Sanchez bested Humphrey applicants from the Philippines as well as other participating countries for a slot in this year’s program.
Madonna Gay Escio, a law graduate from the University of Santo Tomas – Legazpi, currently holds the position of Associate Provincial Prosecutor at the Department of Justice’s National Prosecution Service in Daet, Camarines Norte. Before becoming a lawyer, Escio was a development worker in a non-government organization to promote the rights and welfare of marginalized sectors in the Bicol region’s rural areas. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from University of the Philippines – Los Baños.
Jeza Mae Sarah Sanchez graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the Ateneo de Davao University but her passion for public service motivated her to become a lawyer. She started working for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) while still a law student at the Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. Sanchez is now the Chief of the BJMP Region 10’s Legal Service Section.
Escio and Sanchez will fly to the United States to pursue non-degree academic study and related professional experiences as part of the 10-month fellowship grant.
Humphrey Fellows are selected based on their potential for leadership and their commitment to public service in either the public or the private sector. The Humphrey Program fosters a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding about issues of common concern in the United States and the fellows’ home countries. The program offers fellows valuable opportunities for leadership development and professional engagement with Americans and their counterparts from many nations. More than 5,600 men and women have been honored as Humphrey Fellows since the program began in 1978. Approximately 200 fellowships are awarded annually. Thirteen major universities in the United States host Humphrey Fellows every year. These host universities are chosen for their excellence in the program’s designated fields of study and for the resources and support they offer Humphrey Fellows.
Congratulations to Atty. Madonna Gay Escio and Atty. Jeza Mae Sarah Sanchez for their selection to the 2020 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program!
