U.S Ambassador to the Philippines Honorable Philip Goldberg held a dinner reception honouring all Fulbright scholars on June 2, 2016 at the Charles Parsons Ballroom at the US Embassy. “As scholars, you will be facing new and exciting challenges, take on immense responsibilities, see different parts of the United States…and we expect that leadership, excellence and service from all the men and women will come full turn after the program,” Ambassador Goldberg said.
Of this year’s batch, 70 percent are women and five scholars under the Classic Fulbright Program are in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Johaira Wahab-Manantan of the Department of Foreign Affairs will be the first Philippine Fulbright scholar to pursue an LL.M. in National Security Law. Helen Betonio of the Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and Edel Villanueva of Vintar National High School will be the first representatives of their respective institutions under the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA).Theressa Fely Enriquez from the Lyceum of the Philippines and Nicole Emellie Yu from Far Eastern University will be pioneer representatives of their schools in the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program.
Also present during the event were notable Fulbright alumni such as National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose, Akbayan Partylist Representative Ibarra Gutierrez and former President and CEO of the Social Security System Corazon dela Paz- Bernardo; and Department of Justice Secretary Emmanuel Caparas.
