Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program (SIR)

Program Overview:

Through the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program (SIR), U.S. institutions host a scholar from outside of the United States for a semester or full academic year to teach courses, assist in curriculum development, guest lecture, develop study abroad/exchange partnerships and engage with the campus and the local community. Their activities typically enhance the institution’s global studies programs, interdisciplinary course/program offerings, and broaden international cooperation.

In addition, Fulbright S-I-Rs are expected to engage in on-campus and community activities in various ways throughout the program’s duration. S-I-R grants are for either one semester or an academic year.

This SIR recruitment is for the scholar to be based at the California  Polytechnic Pomona (CPP). CPP is the largest polytechnic institution in the California State University System. What makes a polytechnic university is a focus on applied learning. Our mission is to cultivate success through a diverse culture of experiential learning, discovery, innovation, and our vision is to be the model for an inclusive polytechnic university that inspires creativity and innovation. The College of Science strives to inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning.

Grant Activities:

Candidates are sought for awards at U.S. institutions of higher learning to:

  • Teach courses from a comparative or international perspective,
  • Serve as a resource person in interdisciplinary courses or professional programs,
  • Participate in special seminars or colloquia that will benefit from the scholars's perspective, and
  • Assist in developing new courses or programs, or in upgrading existing course materials.

In addition, candidates for S-I-R awards must be prepared to fulfill campus and community engagement activities

Examples include:

  • Serving as a resource for faculty and students in various ways
  • Participating in campus and community life
  • Speaking at civic, professional, and cultural organizations and schools
  • Engaging with local media

ELIGIBILITY:

Fulbright S-I-Rs candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • English language proficiency,
  • Pminimal or no prior experience living in the United States, and
  • Appropriate professional credentials to perform the program and activities described in an institution's proposal.

GRANT BENEFITS:

  Fulbright S-I-Rs are provided by the U.S. Department of State with:

  • A stipend $4,182 per month (this is based on the US Department of State stipend calculation for California),
  • One-time allowances for settling-in expenses ($1,393), professional development ($840-$1,285), baggage ($300), in transit costs($300), and S-I-R supplemental allowance ($1,200 - $3,000) depending on grant length,
  • A monthly dependent insurance allowance; $240 per month for one qualifying dependents (note that qualifying dependents include spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 who accompany the scholar for at least 80% of the time in the United States),
  • Round-trip international airfare for the S-I-R and up to two qualifying dependents who accompany the scholar for at least 80% of the time in the United States,
  • Accident and sickness health benefits for the S-I-R (scholars must purchase J-Visa compliant insurance for all accompanying dependents),
  • J-Visa sponsorship for the Scholar and accompanying spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21,
  • In addition, many host institutions offer cost-sharing benefits (a salary supplement and/or other accommodations, which vary widely according to the resources available at the institutions)

Completed online Fulbright SIR Scholar Application (https://apply.iie.org/sir). Include the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two letters of references, on behalf of the candidate (must be from supervisors or professional references)
  • Letter from scholar's home institution stating that the scholar will receive leave of absence if selected for the Fulbright grant
  • Passport bio-data pages for the scholar

Submission date to the Fulbright SIR link is March 3, 2026.
If selected, the scholar will be on official grant terms from August 15, 2026 to June 1, 2027

Scholar will:

  • Teach 2 courses per semester, a calculus class, and an upper-level course in their area of expertise.
  • Develop an international course between Cal Poly Pomona and universities in his country.
  • Present at our colloquium and at other universities and conferences.
  • Collaborate with teachers in the surrounding counties and contribute their international perspective to discussions about curriculum design.
  • Co-organize the Mathcounts chapter competition and offer guest coaching sessions.

CalPolyPomona's mission is for the  S-I-R to develop an international course in one of the university's core classes, in collaboration with their home university. Currently, CPP faculty run a Real Analysis class with two universities in Argentina, via Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), in which students from the two universities work on problems together. CPP is envisioning a similar course with a university at a Southeast-Asian country, which would enrich our teaching of mathematics with a global perspective.
