Jan Aldrin Belisario is a public high school English teacher in Albay, Philippines. He has been serving the Department of Education for ten years now. He works with students with intermediate to lower intermediate literacy scores. His students come from low-income households. They range from 12 to 18 years old and are 50, on average, in each class. He optimizes student engagement and improves student academic achievement through creative lesson planning, innovative teaching strategies, problem-based projects, collaborative learning, and intensive reading and writing activities.
His recent works focused on ESL curriculum writing and the development of instructional materials. As a teacher, he has been a campus journalism moderator, a speech and academic competition coach, a teacher trainer on educational technology, and culture and the arts coordinator. He received a scholarship from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and won a national culture-based lesson exemplar writing competition for promoting original Pinoy (Philippine) music. He developed assessment tools and learning modules in English for DepEd Albay and Region V. His interests include heritage-based education, campus journalism, literature, research, technology-based projects, and professional development programs.
He founded The Dawani Project, Inc., an organization that develops young creatives at the grassroots level. It drew support from the local arts and music scene, the creative industry, and respected art institutions. For four years, the project has supported young artists with talent—but without the machinery—in film, dance, visual & digital arts, music, etc., through creative camps, workshops, exhibits, public performances, and more. Jan Aldrin is a local singer-songwriter, and a creative and art director.
Belisario also teaches at a local university where he pursues his masters' degrees.
In response to the pandemic, he helped develop learning activity modules in English for distance learning. He also writes and produces music for DepEd TV, the television broadcast channel of the Department of Education.
Belisario was accepted to the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers (Fulbright DAI) and will attend the Indiana University of Pennsylvania for the Fulbright academic-internship program. His objective in the fellowship program is to explore the global trends and best practices on language, heritage-based, and technology-based teaching to develop and mount projects to improve literacy in his part of the country.
